'Aftermarket Network' Report PDF Print E-mail

THE Right To Repair Campaign has been launched across Europe with a stark warning about the future of the independent sector.

ImageSpeaking today in Paris, Bert Mons, secretary general of the European Garage Equipment Association said: “Unless we act now, the future of the independent automotive aftermarket and the freedom of consumers to choose is in jeopardy,” said Bert Mons.

Bert was speaking at the official launch of the European-wide campaign held as part of the Equip Auto exhibition in Paris.

A string of senior figures from some of the biggest automotive organisations in Europe explained how technological changes have improved cars but made servicing and repairing them increasingly difficult.

They highlighted the fact that Block Exemption Regulations are set to expire in 2010 and that there is no guarantee they will be renewed.

Speakers hope the campaign will help protect the 3.5 million people and 665,000 businesses in the aftermarket across Europe.
They called on vehicle manufacturers and European law-makers to fulfil three major objectives:

  • For vehicle manufacturers to fully comply with the provisions of the Block Exemption Regulations.
  • For vehicle manufacturers to make available the information needed by manufacturers of diagnostic tools.
  • For European law-makers to renew and improve Block Exemption Regulations.


Jacopo Moccia, of the European Council for Motor Traders and Repairers said small businesses were the ‘backbone’ of the European market.

“They provide services at close proximity to consumers, help to keep jobs and skills local and provide employment not only in major cities but also in rural communities,” he said.

The picture shows campaigners at a meeting held earlier this year to rally support for the UK arm of the Right To Repair Campaign. The UK campaign and its associated activities will be officially launched on October 30th.
